An alliance of 48 aged care groups will today launch a national campaign to put aged care on the election agenda after silence from the major parties on how they will address the aged care needs of older Australians. The Australians Deserve to Age Well campaign www.agewellcampaign.com.au will target all political parties, calling for an end to the ‘aged care lottery’ so that older people no longer have to wait for months to receive the care they need.

Legislation passed in the Senate yesterday giving older Australians more choice about their home care services is a very welcome improvement to our aged care system, leading seniors advocate COTA Australia said today.

COTA Chief Executive Ian Yates said the new provisions will for the first time allow older people to choose their services and who provides them, rather than having services determined for them.

The new legislation will allow people who are unhappy with the services they are receiving, or who need to relocate out of the area, to change providers and keep their package.

Assistant Minister for Social Services, Alan Tudge today announced the commencement of a new service to assist carers. Carer Gateway will make it easier for carers to find information, practical advice and services to support them in their caring role.

Carer Gateway guides carers to the support and resources they need through a website, phone service and service finder.

Up to now, carers have been searching for services through a number of often confusing pathways across the disability, community mental health and aged care sectors.
